Abstract

Water jet peening is a method using cavitation jet peening to introduce compressive residual stress into target surface, which has already been applied in nuclear power plants as a measure against stress corrosion cracking. In this report, we confirmed the effects of the water jet peening on cracked surface. Visual inspection after water jet peening might not be available because crack is closed, in which case ultrasonic inspection will still work. Reduction of tensile residual stress around cracks is confirmed. In addition, we found that crack growth rate decreased after water jet peening in shallow stress corrosion cracking.
