Abstract
We present the self-equilibrium solutions of 1+n helical strands. This is a problem to determine the torque-balanced configuration due to the physical twist of each wire and geometrical twist of side wires without any external loads. In our formulation, the radial contact between the core and side wires is taken into account in three-dimensional space in oder to describe the lock-up phenomena. The successfully derived explicit epressions for helical angle and contact pressure allow us to predict the self-equilibrium characteristics from the micro stractual factors of the strands.
