Abstract
Nos trá¢mites do jogo polático colonial, o fato de pertencer ao Senado daCá¢mara detonava prestágio aos indiváduos e permitia que produzissem discursos epráticas de distinção social e nobilitação. No Antigo Maranhão, entendidoenquanto uma região pertencente ao Império luso no Antigo Regime, essesoficiais da Cá¢mara reinventaram o tradicional conceito de nobreza (de corte,hereditária, titulada) e adequaram-no á s circunstá¢ncias e aos elementos locais que tinham á disposição. Nesteartigo, pretendo discutir as formas e estratégias utilizadas por esses homens para reinventarem localmente a ideiade nobreza, moldando-a as suas possibilidades e interesses, garantindo assim um eficaz reconhecimento entreseus pares na colônia.
