Abstract

This paper deals with the issue of the confrontation experienced by the character Quaderna in the novel Romance da Pedra do Reino by Ariano Suassuna. Quaderna introduced himself as the rightful heir of the throne once destroyed. He avoids physical fights by arming himself with astuteness. He shall be required, however, to face the consequences of his subversive behavior. In such an environment, he is faced with other characters, who confront him, forcing him to see the truth about the pursued goal. We highlight the confrontation with the character Pedro Beato, who attempts to persuade him to follow the path of forgiveness. The most violent encounter is the one with O Corregedor (the magistrate), who represents the cruel law that attempts to condemn Quaderna as a criminal. Artful and eloquent, Quaderna tries to get away through words and laughter
