Abstract
During the period of 1965-1998 there were carried out observations of birds in the surrounding forests by Lake Kretuonas (Švenˇionys district, eastern Lithuania). Additional point counts of birds were done during the breeding period of 1998. All birds, either seen or heard, as well as their nests found were registered during the observations. On the whole, 74 bird species were registered, 60 of which were nesting. There were found 9 bird species, which are included into the Red Data Book of Lithuania (Lesser Spotted Eagle, Black Grouse, Capercaillie, Crane, Stock Dove, Tengmalm's Owl, European Roller, Hoopoe, and Three-toed Woodpecker). 3 of them (Capercaillie, European Roller and Hoopoe) have vanished by now. In recent decades Wryneck, Barred Warbler and Common Redstart have become rarer.
