Abstract

Surface anisotropy and the surface-bulk exchange interaction may induce surface magnetic structures (SMS). SMS can reduce coercivity and must be taken into account when interpreting surface magnetic measurements. Fe(100) very likely exhibits SMS. In 3d-4f alloys, SMS occur naturally and can be characterized with few parameters.
