Abstract
An evolutionary perspective on language necessitates an investigation into the continuity between human language and animal communication, as well as the specific characteristics of language with respect to non-human communication. A review of the literature reveals that the elements of continuity between language and animal communication are based on their shared functional role. Language is on par with other forms of animal communication, serving to influence the behaviors of others, rather than informing others of something. In order to enhance their persuasive abilities, archaic humans developed narrative forms of communication using pantomime. From this perspective, narrative persuasion is the defining feature that distinguishes human communication from animal communication.
