Abstract

Abstract Several researchers have analyzed the relationship between job context variables and leisure behavior in terms of a “compensatory versus spillover” framework. These studies basically attempt to specify the conditions under which leisure activities represent either a compensation for deprivations experienced in the work context or as a spillover of a mind set and behaviors assimiliated on the job. It is clear that the process by which the job context affects leisure attitudes and behavior needs further explication. The objective of the present paper is to analyze work and leisure orientations as they relate to several dimensions of involvement in sports. The independent variable of job context involves not only the skill level, but also includes global job satisfaction, self-actualization aspects of the job, and a measure of the extent to which work serves as an anchor for self-identity.
