Abstract

The reaction of Cp 2MCl 2 (M = Ti, V) with two equivalents of AgEF 6 (E = As, Sb), in SO 2 led to the quantitative preparation of the hexafluoropnicogenate complexes Cp 2Ti(AsF 6) 2, Cp 2Ti(SbF 6) and Cp 2V(SbF 6 2. Cp 2Ti(Sb 2F 11) 2 was prepared from Cp 2Ti(SbF 6) 2 and stoichiometric amounts of SbF 5. By reaction of Cp 2Ti(AsF 6) 2 with the neutral Lewis base CH 3CN the cationic metallocene derivatives [Cp 2Ti(CH 3CN) n ] 2+ [AsF 6 −] 2 ( n = 2, 3) could be obtained. The relatively high stability of these covalent and cationic titanocene hexafluoroarsenates toward water is of great interest because of their biological activity. The germicidal activity of a number of metallocene hexafluoropnicogenate complexes has been investigated. Although neither the “Cp 2Ti 2+” unit nor AsF 6 − show a strong bactericide activity, the metallocene perfluoropnicogenate species do show this effect. A possible reaction mechanism is discussed.
