Abstract
The paper discusses the implementa tion of information technology (IT) in Danish public libraries and the impact of IT on working conditions and organizational structure. The background for today's function-dri ven organization of labour is out lined, followed by a presentation of a research project (The UDFO-project), analyzing the introduction of comput er mediated work in public libraries. In a survey panel, 29 'key persons' are interviewed on their assessments of 14 suppositions concerning organiza tional adaptation to IT. It is presumed, that today's integrated library systems will be a critical success factor for public libraries, forcing them to experimental design of new patterns for computer mediated work process es. The conclusion of the study points to an emergence of integrated work patterns in a task force oriented orga nization, making an appropriate fit with IT. Supported by Group Decision Support Systems (GDSS), an inter-disciplinary task force design will promote organizational learning during daily work performance.
