Abstract

Abstract Thin-film organic light-emitting devices are beginning to come of age. Several key manufacturers have announced their intention to make consumer displays using technology based on novel conjugated organic materials. Progress in development of materials has been rapid but there is still much debate over the fundamental principles regarding the mechanisms of electrical conduction, charge injection, light emission and degradation. This area of research requires an interdisciplinary approach and offers the opportunity of strong collaboration between industrial and academic interests around the world.
