Abstract

In her first article, Janet Bothamley examined the literature on theatre nurses' perceptions of organ donation, in particular the emotional and stressful situations it may cause. This second article deals with the literature on consent and patients' rights. The author rightly points out that for ‘normal’ patients, theatre nurses take great care in ensuring that valid consent has been obtained in writing for surgical procedures. Consent for organ donation is often not given by the patient, and theatre nurses have no involvement with the family or relatives when these matters are discussed. There are many interesting and important issues here for theatre nurses.
