Abstract

Children with cerebral palsy are a physical development disorder that generally has problems in dental and oral health. One way to overcome dental and oral health problems is by brushing their teeth. Parents should receive oral physiotherapy lessons to help their children to clean their teeth and mouth from food residue properly. This research objective to analyse the effect of learning oral physiotherapy patient’s parents on the teeth brushing skills of children with cerebral palsy at Hasan Sadikin Hospital. The method use Quasi-experimental study and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test with group pre and post-test design for 20 children with cerebral palsy, using purposive sampling. The results show before being given oral physiotherapy lessons, it has 90% less skills and 10% moderate skills. After being given the lessons, it increased to 75% less skills, 15% moderate and 10% good skills. The average skill before the lessons is 6.80 while after the lessons it increased to 8.75. The results showed there was an effect of learning oral physiotherapy from the patient's parents on the teeth brushing skills of children with cerebral palsy with a significant value of 0.039. There is an effect of oral physiotherapy learning on patient's parents on the teeth brushing skills of children with cerebral palsy at Hasan Sadikin Hospital. It is recommended to dental and oral therapists to carry out dental health education activities or outreach to the community with interesting methods to increase knowledge about how to maintain dental and oral health, especially children with cerebral palsy.
