Abstract

Objective To investigate the clinical and demographic characteristics of oral lymphoepithelial cyst. Study Design The files of an oral pathology service were reviewed for cases diagnosed as oral lymphoepithelial cyst. Data of patient sex, age, lesion location, clinical presentation, and clinical diagnosis were collected. Descriptive statistics were done. Results Forty-one cases of oral lymphoepithelial cysts were found among 36,359 archived specimens (0.11%). Lesions affected mainly women (73.2%) and persons of white ethnicity (53.7%), with a mean age of 46 years (range, 13-70), appearing mostly as an asymptomatic lesion at the tongue border (29.3%) and floor of the mouth (19.5%). Among 41 lesions, 25 (61%) measured less than 1 cm; 28 (68.3%) were whitish or had coloration similar to the surrounding mucosa. In 19 cases (46.3%), clinical diagnosis was not oral lymphoepithelial cyst, and fibrous hyperplasia and mucocele were commonly cited (12.2% each). Additionally, a case arising on the hard palate of a 69-year-old man is presented. Conclusion Oral lymphoepithelial cysts are uncommon lesions. The clinical and demographic data found herein are in accordance with previous reports. Support: FAPEMIG.
