Abstract
Cervical visualization through a colposcope with a bright white light provides critical visual information with minimal clinician fatigue. However, the use of the colposcope for other everyday exams is impractical. Other methods of cervical illumination emit a dull yellow, low intensity light, and they usually require one hand to actively hold the lighting device. OptiSpec® Light is a new concept in non-colposcopic illumination of the cervix. An ultrabright LED selected to provide a pure white light spectrum has been mounted in a small, clip-on disposable package. The result is an excellent illumination of the cervix with a device that otherwise seems like that it is not even there. The lights come in a sterile pack of 25 lights which are optionally disposable. In low resource countries, these lights can be reused and will be a boon in patient camps. The compact light easily clips on to the most common vaginal specula. Its unobtrusive configuration remains out of the visual and working fields. This innovative Instrumentation provides a simple, hands-free light that improves visualization during exams, PAP smears, and other directly visualized vaginal procedures. The efficient light-emitting diode (LED) provides truer color visualization with a light that is whiter than halogen bulbs. I welcome this piece of technology and new Instrumentation to the field of Gynecology and Women’s Health.
