Abstract
Work by Maunsell and TRL has been undertaken to develop a method for predicting future maintenance costs on the whole bridge stock. This provides a method for comparing maintenance strategies, which can be used as the basis for optimisation techniques. The objective of this project was to contribute to the development of a general reliability-based framework to be used by the Highways Agency in order to plan optimal strategies for the maintenance of bridges so as to optimise whole-life costs. This was to be achieved through the development of a computational methodology for the management of bridge stocks based on future reliability and maintenance costs. The methodology was to take into account the entire history of the bridge reliability deterioration taking account of adverse environmental effects, such as corrosion, and positive rehabilitation for different maintenance regimes.
