Abstract
An erbium fiber amplifier based on a silicate fiber and operating in the unsaturated-gain regime is modelled. A genetic algorithm is used to search for the values of the parameters of the erbium fiber amplifier in order to simultaneously optimize the noise and transfer characteristics of the device. It is shown that it is possible to simultaneously obtain low values of the noise factor (6.0–8.0 dB) and nonuniformity of the gain spectrum (1.8–3.8 dB) in the 1540–1560-nm spectral band that is acceptable for local communication lines.
