Abstract
The problem of optimizing detection of the pileup of randomly occuring exponential tail pulses in white noise is considered. An attempt is made to reduce the process to an algorithm that could practically be performed in real time. Quantitative estimates are made for the performance of such an “optimum” detector. The relation to a more general pattern recognition problem is mentioned.
