Abstract
Wind turbine driven Self-excited induction generators (SEIG) have proved to be an attractive option for meeting stand-alone load demand at isolated locations. The SEIG needs adjustable reactive VAR to maintain its terminal voltage and frequency at the desired value which is usually provided by a combination of static compensator (STATCOM) and fixed capacitor bank. The efficiency and hence the actual yearly electrical energy output of this type of Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS) depends critically on the amount of reactive power supplied by the fixed capacitor bank. In this paper, an algorithm is presented for selecting the value of this fixed capacitor so as to maximize the yearly energy output from the WECS instead of maximizing the efficiency of the WECS at any particular operating point as has normally been reported in the literature. The proposed method of fixed capacitor selection is shown to increase annual energy capture by the WECS between 5%–7% compared to earlier methods reported in the literature.
