Abstract
The effects of Li doping on the superconducting compound Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O x (BSCCO 2212) have been studied by considering Li substitution for Sr or Cu and Li additions to stoichiometric BSCCO. Extensive investigations of the processing-structure-property relationships for a wide variety of Li-doped 2212 stoichiometries have been performed using ceramic pellets. As Li doping reduces the melting temperature bp as much as 140°C, a broad range of sintering temperatures has been studied. Sintering conditions have been optimiped for T c . Li substitution for Cu and Sr has been shown to increase the onset and zero resistance temperatures. Inductively coupled argon plasma emission (ICP) analpsis for the powders and sintered pellets showed some loss of Li during the initial formation of 2212 phase. Microstructural studies have also been carried out by scanning eletron microscopy (SEM).
