Abstract

Acetyl 11 keto β boswellic acid (AKBA) is anti-inflammatory agent obtained from oleoresin gum of Boswellia serrata. In the present study microwave assisted extraction (MAE) technique has been employed for extraction AKBA. Firstly MAE was optimized using one factor at a time approach by selecting different parameters such as solvents type, microwave power (W), extraction time (min), solute to solvent ratio (w/v), ethanol concentration (%) and number of extraction cycle. MAE of AKBA was further optimized using orthogonal array design (OAD). OAD is a statistical tool used to optimize MAE process as well as to determine significant parameter that influences the extraction yield of AKBA. Optimized conditions for OAD were found as microwave power of 272 W, extraction time of 4 min (30 sec on/off), solute to solvent ratio of 1:25 (w/v) and ethanol concentration of 90% (v/v) for highest 92.00 ± 0.25 mg/g extraction yield of AKBA in one extraction cycle. Microwave power (W) has shown significant influence on extraction yield of AKBA. MAE decreases extraction time as well as solvent consumption as compare to batch extraction and ultrasound assisted extraction (UAE).
