Abstract

Abstract The objective of this study is to investigate the optimal machining parameters in the wire EDM of Monel 400 with molybdenum as the tool electrode. The input parameters taken in this experimental work are pulse on time, pulse off time, peak current and wire feed. Their effect on response variables, Material Removal Rate (MRR), Dimensional deviation (DD) and Spark Gap are studied. Taguchi’s L27standard orthogonal array is used to design the experimental layout. Using a single response optimization technique, the S/N ratios were found for each experimental run and the Mean effects plot and Response table are generated using the statistical software Minitab. These results were further used to identify optimum input parameters for each of the response variables and the most influential input factor for the same. Also, confirmation tests were done with the optimum input parameter combinations obtained from the software to verify the improvement in response characteristics
