Abstract

ABSTRACT The ability to link a DNA profile to a source of biological material has significant implications in forensic investigations. Epithelial cells are the main constituent of many of the samples collected as part of forensic casework. However, it is currently not possible to distinguish between or isolate epithelial cells from different anatomical regions. Flow cytometry represents a potential method that could be used in this context. This study was conducted to optimize procedures for the collection and processing of epidermal, buccal, vaginal and penile epithelial cells prior to analysis by flow cytometry.
