Abstract

The dissimilar metal joint between stainless steel and Corten steel is encountered in many places in rail coach manufacturing, the Integral Coach Factory has been meeting the needs of the Indian Railways for varied types of coaches hence, and this is the major need for doing this experiment. One such combination being Duplex Stainless Steel (ASTM 332205/332201) with CORTEN STEEL (ASTM-242-A). Gas Metal Arc Welding is one of the widely used welding processes in this manufacturing activity owing to its faster and economy characteristics. In this work the main purpose is to get a sound quality weld joint between these two dissimilar metals, namely - Duplex stainless steel (ASTM 332205) and Weathering Steel to grade Corten-A (ASTM-242-A) in order to achieve a weld joint free from defects. The study and experiment was successful in finding out the optimum welding parameters for welding dissimilar metal joints of 2 mm thick steel sheets of DSS-2205 and Corten-steel.
