Abstract

ABSTRACT Simple slotted structures are encountered in variable reluctance machines like vernier motors and stepper motors. Conditions for optimising the average force and torque output of such machines are investigated in this paper. It is shown that the cheapest torque is available for a particular tooth geometry whereas the maximum force and torque require a slightly different tooth geometry. The conditions for optimum force and torque production are derived with the iron parts operating in the linear region, nonlinear region and deep saturation region.
