Abstract

Integration of renewable energy sources at the consumer end in a distribution system leads to consumption of less power from the substation as well as to reduce the energy loss. But integrating a large amount of Photovoltaic (PV) systems cause reverse power flow in feeders which increase the voltage beyond the upper limit in the distribution line and inject power into the substation. Using battery energy storage (BES) units solves both the problems simultaneously. In this paper size of both PV panel and the BES system are optimized so as to obtain minimum energy loss. Here Improved Harmony Search Algorithm (IHSA) is used for placement and capacity optimization of PV and BES units in a 69-bus radial distribution system. IHSA is proved to be very fast, efficient and reliable optimization technique in solving this problem.
