Abstract

The major cause of voltage instability in a power system is due to the imbalance between reactive power demand and supply. Due to advancement in power semiconductor technology, the utilization of FACTS devices has become an efficient solution to overcome voltage instability in power system. The weak transmission lines which are prone to voltage collapse are identified using a line voltage stability index. The power blackouts arising from voltage instability can be avoided if identification of the weak area leading to voltage collapse can be identified at an early stage using voltage stability index (VSI). In this paper, a line voltage stability indicator, VSI _ 2 is used to identify weak transmission lines in the system. In order to enhance the voltage stability of the system, FACTS devices, i.e., TCSC and STATCOM are placed in series and shunt with weak transmission lines. An IEEE 30 bus test system is used for validation of the proposed approach.
