Abstract

This paper discusses the optimal placement of distributed generation (DG) units for constant and variable load profile of a microgrid. At first, an objective function to minimize active power loss in the distribution system is defined. Load flow study using forward/backward sweep algorithm is used to find real power loss in the system. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is the algorithm considered for optimal sizing and placement of DG. The improvement in voltage profile and reduction in active power loss due to the optimal placement of DG are verified for IEEE 33 bus system. The performance is verified for constant load and variable load conditions.
