Abstract
Abstract The color etching of LDX 2101 and LDX 2404 lean duplex stainless steel weld microstructures is optimized for an image analysis characterization process to determine the austenite-ferrite phase ratio. The results are validated in the weld metal with Feritscope ® and electron backscattered diffraction methods, which are comparable to ASTM E562 manual point count results. The optimized etching and subsequent image analysis process enables an accurate measurement of the austenite-ferrite ratio in the narrow heat affected zone of these duplex stainless steel welds in addition to the fusion zone, where the application of other measurement methods is very circumstantial.
