Abstract

A new solution method has been developed for the optimal design of multi-purpose batch chemical plants. The minimum capital investment cost serves for the optimality criterion. The algorithm is built upon two decomposition stages: a combinatorial step allowing the use of some heuristics and a nonlinear programming stage. A quasi-optimal solution is guarantied.
