Abstract

A modification of the branch and bound approach in linear integer programming is proposed to include nonlinear optimization problems involving continuous, integer, and discrete design variables. The methodology is based on a piecewise linear representation of the nonlinear problem. The proposed algorithm is used to optimally configure a cantilever composite laminate beam for minimum weight and constraints on strength displacements, and natural frequencies.
