Abstract

Abstract The problem of finding the optimal activity distribution in isothermal catalyst pellets is investigated for linear kinetics and shell progressive poisoning. It is found that when the rate limiting step is the chemical reaction then the optimal distribution is an appropriately chosen Dirac delta function, i.e. the optimal strategy is to concentrate the active component in a thin shell located inside the pellet. However, in the case of large Thiele numbers the uniform distribution is not substantially inferior to any other catalyst distribution.
