Abstract
Abstract Using the calculus of variations, we show that a Gaussian pupil leads, in the paraxial approximation, to an optimum apodization of the diffraction image under the conditions of constant pupil energy and constant moment of inertia. Some properties of the diffraction image are pointed out.
