Abstract
AbstractThe optical absorption spectra of two garnets, NaCa2Ni2V2O12 and NaCa2Co2V3O12 have been measured at various temperatures between 4.2 °K and room temperature. The data have been fitted to a crystal field theory which includes spin‐orbit coupling and the trigonal field of the S6 site. The parameters of the trigonal field for a best fit for both crystals were v = 2100 cm−1 and v′ = −500 cm−1. A discussion of the results refered to the magnetic properties of garnets is given.
