Abstract
Linear and nonlinear optical responses of semiconductor or metal in photonic crystal slabs (PCS) are discussed. Samples are prepared by inserting active materials into quartz gratings fabricated by means of e-beam lithography. Additional polymer layer is added in order to support quasi-waveguide modes if necessary. Inorganic-organic hybrid semiconductor with prominent excitonic resonance is used to demonstrate polaritonic effect at room temperature. Subpicosecond optical switching operation based on the optical Stark effect is achieved in the semiconductor PCS. Second harmonic generation from symmetric PCS consisting of centrosymmetric materials vanishes at normal incidence while that from asymmetric PCS does not. Photo incuced voltage across the metallic PCS have been found for the first time, which may be ascribed to optical rectification. (© 2004 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
