Abstract

In the framework of Stahl's coherent wave approach optical properties of semiconducting slabs in the excitonic region of the spectrum are discussed. Two integral equations are derived from which excitonic reflection and transmission spectra can be calculated. For slabs whose thickness is much greater than the corresponding excitonic Bohr radius the equations can be solved by making use of the so-called adiabatic approximation. Calculations are performed for CdS, GaAs and RbI slabs reproducing well experimental spectra. From the best fit for a RbI slab, excitonic parameters of the 1s exciton are determined.
