Abstract

An optical method is described for simultaneous monitoring of more than 100 luminous events on a single film record, e.g., the breakdown of spark gaps. A time resolution better than 1 nsec may be achieved. The system employs light pipes, an image converter streak camera, and a trigger delay generator, all commercially available items. Sample records of the breakdown of a sample of 16 spark gaps in a megajoule capacitor bank are shown; the time resolution is about 1 nsec.
