Abstract

The optical quality of large single crystals of α-LiIO 3 grown by a slow evaporation method has been studied. The optical observations showed that some crystals involved optical inhomogeneities such as striae and scattering centers. The striae appeared in crystals which were grown with the growth velocity of more than 0.05 mm/day along the a-axis. These striae cause severe distortion of a laser beam. The formation of scattering centers was dependent mainly on the pH of mother solutions. These scattering centers bring about high loss of optical transmission and slight distortion of a laser beam.
