Abstract

Summary form only given. An optical exclusive-OR (EX-OR) logic device is one of the basic elements for photonic switching and optical computing systems. The authors discuss optical EX-OR logic operation using a tunable wavelength conversion (TWC) laser diode. The experimental setup was composed of two distributed feedback laser diodes as input light sources, a TWC laser diode as a logic element, and an optical spectrum analyzer. Threshold powers of the input light for triggering and for suppressing the lasing of the TWC laser were measured to be 0.03 and 0.9 mW, respectively, by using a variable optical attenuator. Results demonstrate that optical EX-OR logic operation was realized: lasing light of the TWC laser is EX-OR output for two input lights of which the 1 level is 0.5-0.8 mW and the 0 level is less than 0.01 mW. >
