Abstract

Crystals of yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG) emit a broad luminescent band peaking at 270 nm under X-irradiation at 4K. Exploitation of the magneto-optical properties of this emission makes possible measurement of EPR spectra of an excited state of the emitting centres. It is suggested that at least three different centres are responsible for the 270 nm emission and the relevance of the results to rare earth-doped YAG phosphors is discussed.
