Abstract

AbstractWe will present an overview of the various optical concepts used in intraocular lenses: while the conventional monofocal lens was designed to provide basic refractive correction, modern aspheric lenses aim to provide better contrast sensitivity by compensation of intrinsic or corneal spherical aberration. Toric lenses were developed to correct corneal astigmatism during cataract surgery. Multifocal lenses aim to provide functional visual acuity at various distance levels. There are basically two concepts of implementing multifocality: those based on refraction and those based on diffraction. Modern extended depth of focus lenses try to fill in the gap between monofocal and multifocal lenses by providing acceptable visual acuity from far distance to intermediate distance.
