Abstract

Symmetry breaking effects on the top-most of the valence band in long-range ordered Ga0.5In0.5P have been investigated by means of reflectivity and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The results are consistent with a band scheme where the trigonal crystal field splits the valence band in a high energy level of \\varGamma6v symmetry and a low energy level of \\varGamma4v+\\varGamma5v symmetry. The corresponding optical transitions, \\varGamma6v→\\varGamma6c and (\\varGamma4+\\varGamma5)v→\\varGamma6c, are fairly well described in terms of trigonal selection rules.
