Abstract

(n-ClC6H4C2H4NH3)2PbCl4 ((n-ClPEA)2PbCl4) (n = 2, 3, and 4) and (n-C6H5C2H4NH3)2PbCl4 ((PEA)2PbCl4) crystals were synthesized by the slow-cooling method, and the photoluminescence (PL) and scintillation properties were evaluated. All the samples showed self-trapped excitons luminescence at 400–700 nm. The PL quantum yields of the (n-ClPEA)2PbCl4 (n = 2, 3, and 4) and (PEA)2PbCl4 crystals were 2.2, 0.9, 11.2, and 2.2 %, respectively. In the pulse-height spectra of 241Am α-rays (5.5 MeV), full energy absorption peaks were observed, and the light yields of (n-ClPEA)2PbCl4 (n = 2, 3, and 4) and (PEA)2PbCl4 crystals were respectively calculated to be 530, 490, 2,800, and 1,400 photons/5.5 MeV-α with typical errors of ± 10 %.
