Abstract
Immediacy: Let us recap on where I have got to with my model and do a bit of tidying up in the process. We are making a clear distinction between a technological domain and a social domain, the former having to do with harnessing the physical environment or inanimate nature to serve mankind, the latter having to do with human behaviour and how it interacts with this changing external environment. In times of stability the two domains settle down to a state of harmony. But when this harmony is disturbed it is largely changes in technological capability which cause the upheaval. The social pattern then no longer fits with the new technology and what we get is new technology grafted on to the old social forms, which still survive and prevent that society from reaping the full benefits of the advances in technology.
