Abstract
The open landscaped office has received a high degree of acceptance which, a few years ago, would have surprised many acousticians. Experience has shown that a satisfactory degree of privacy is practical in open offices, provided acoustics is taken into account in the initial conceptual and the design stages. This paper discusses the acoustical requirements of each critical factor or component of an office, such as the ceiling, screens, wall and window coverings, background sound system, and distance. Analytical considerations are supported by objective and subjective testing in an anechoic room and in working offices. The quantitative performance of offices is discussed and proposals are made for standardizing this in terms of percentage speech intelligibility.
