Abstract

This research is focusing on the performing and technical teaching aspects of Beethoven's piano sonata ”Lebewohl” op.81a. Le-Be-Wohl, the farewell motive is the essential variable material that runs through the entire first movement as its construction. By analyzing the music form, the notation in all editions and also by comparing with the pianists' recordings, we may be able to find out how the diverse and interpretational this work can be. Through these we may then deconstruct the spirit of this work. In his lifetime, Ludwig van Beethoven composed 32 pieces of piano sonata. His early works merged Baroque with Vienna Classical. The works during his midlife were characterized as bold, innovative, and experimental. His later works were profoundly spiritual. His piano sonatas not only surpassed clavier's performance limit, but also promoted the magnificent acoustic effects of modern piano. His works also established the philosophical trend of the Romantic Period. Beethoven's piano works transcended all previous music forms, with the spirit of freedom, equality and philanthropy and unswerving heroic character in his personality. For those who are searching for works that combine great technical difficulties and artistic elements, then Beethoven's piano sonatas which combine objective rational with subjective artistic perception is the answer they are looking for.
