Abstract

Robert Schumann, one of the great composers in the Romantic period, whose piano works played a significant role in the 19th century. He emphasized the expression of feeling in his music creations and treated music as one form of language, so that more literature tastes could be blended in his works. Piano sonata No.2 in g minor, accomplished in the time of his richness in piano works in 1830-1840s, is the most famous one among his three sonatas and performed most often. This thesis is organized as follows. Chapter 1, an introduction, includes the research motivation, purpose, method, and literature review. Next, Schumann’s biography and his music style is introduced in Chapter 2. In Chapter 3 the creation background and composition analysis of Piano sonata No.2 in g minor is discussed via the music form, melody, harmony. Rhythm of the four movements are also studied. In Chapter 4 interpretations of his compositions are provided following the analysis. Finally, a conclusion is given in Chapter 5. While Schumann’s creations were rich and innovative, they were nevertheless not unauthodox. He blended his love in literature and the feeling expression into music, giving vivid elements in Piano sonata No.2 in g minor with consecutive themes, which is worth further study and exploration.
