Abstract

The article in question deals with the authors` consideration on the issue of metasigns in the scientific picture of the world, in the domain of terminology. Topicality is determined by the increased attention of linguists to the epidigmatic problems, structural semantic deviations of terms, generally, and lacuna places on the criteria of their taxonomy, in particular. Each science badly needs objects of investigation, alongside with proper methods and its basic metasigns. There work exact, adequate, congruent, equivalent terms in the scientific literature. Dichotomy exact::adequate make the object of our investigation. The empiric material has been extracted from the lexicological definitions and examples from English literary discourse. Applied methods (definitive, componential and discursive) alongside with thesauri of scientists make the facts of our investigation and prove validity of adequate translation. Thus, the translation process works by the principle of Tertium Comparationis. Outer structures of co-related translation units differ in their presentation. Inner structures differ semantically/pragmatically. Tautology, exactness do not work herein due to the convergence of semantic and lexical designs of units involved in translation. The ideas touched upon in this paper are open to further scientific discussions.
