Abstract

This article proposes the term online migrants to define the role of the soccer fan in the contemporary digital landscape, outlining the media-specific and yet mutable characteristics of this practice of cultural communication. It analyzes the transformation of the live & broadcast event—the game itself—into a set of cultural items that reshape the limits of soccer and its consumption. In doing so, it studies the relationship between financially driven media and fan-made flows within the wider landscape of participatory culture. It defines the characteristics of these digital actors in the current mediascape in order to establish the exact coordinates of their time-sensitive, trend-articulated (re-) mediations.
