Abstract

In recent years, the deregulation in power industries is in progress, IPPs and distributed generators are introduced to power systems. It should be important to grasp the power system operating conditions from online data. The authors propose to estimate the operating conditions by use of SMES. In this paper, online evaluation of the dynamic stability of power systems by use of SMES was discussed. Basic experiments in one-machine connected to an infinite bus system were carried out by use of a small generator, artificial transmission lines and a small SMES. The synchronizing and damping coefficients of the power system for various generator output powers were measured with several excitation controls, such as a constant field current and with AVR function of different parameters. The effects of the excitation control on the dynamic stability of the system were evaluated from the online measured synchronizing and damping coefficients by use of SMES.
